About Hyperoptic Broadband deals

If you need the fastest broadband possible, Hyperoptic has you covered. With a deal from this internet service provider, you can get a full-fibre connection delivering download speeds of up to 1Gb (gigabits per second). There’s also the bonus option of being able to sign up to flexible, monthly rolling contracts.

Let’s find out more about its deals for new customers.

Hyperoptic broadband only plans

Hyperoptic broadband is only available in London and a few other locations (including Sheffield, Newcastle, Birmingham, and Nottingham).

Hyperoptic doesn’t use the Openreach (BT line) network like most other broadband providers. Instead, it has its own FTTP (Fibre To The Premises) network.

This means it’s much faster than most, and the choice of speeds it offers are a little different to those you’ll find with other broadband deals.

Hyperoptic offers the following packages:

Hyperoptic 50Mb Fast Fibre Broadband

  • average download speed: 57Mb

Suitable for comfortably streaming in HD

Hyperoptic 150Mb Superfast Fibre Broadband

  • average download speed: 158Mb

Good for busier homes with multiple users online at once or lots of connected smart devices.

Hyperoptic 500Mb Ultrafast Fibre Broadband

  • average download speed: 520Mb

Large homes can comfortably all be online at once, and stream in 4K.

Hyperoptic 1Gb Hyperfast Fibre Broadband

  • average download speed: 900Mb

Perfect for those who need to rely on high-quality broadband. Flawless performance for very large households, even at peak time and committed online gamers.

Hyperoptic’s home broadband service gives you symmetrical broadband speeds, which means that it provides the same speed for both downloading and uploading.

So, while full fibre broadband from BT, for example, is restricted to a maximum upload speed of around 110Mb, Hyperoptic can offer upload speeds up to 900Mb!

All of these packages come with truly unlimited usage without traffic shaping or throttling, or any restrictions based on the type of traffic or the time of day. However, there is an excessive usage policy, meaning you could be warned or have your service suspended if you use an excessively large amount of data, to the material detriment of other customers.

As Hyperoptic's service is based on full fibre optic to the building, there are no slowdowns from copper telephone lines, so the advertised maximum speeds tend to be very close to what you'll actually get. Most gigabit customers get an average speed of at least 95% of what was advertised.

  • What is Openreach?

Openreach is the company that maintains the former British Telecom Network used for the majority of broadband and phone services. If a repair or installation is required, it’s Openreach who will send an engineer, not your provider.

More than 650 service providers using the Openreach network. That’s the majority of the UK’s broadband providers. This includes Sky, TalkTalk and BT. The exception to this is Virgin Media - it uses its own, separate cable network.

How fast is Hyperoptic broadband?

Example download times for the film ‘Wonka’ in 1080p HD (6.5GB)
Hyperoptic package Download Time
Hyperoptic 50Mb 15 mins 12 secs
Hyperoptic 150Mb 5 mins 29 secs
Hyperoptic 500Mb 1 min 40 secs
Hyperoptic 1Gb 57 seconds

Hyperoptic broadband and phone bundles

Hyperoptic has the option of broadband and phone bundles with selected plans, and it will be possible to keep your existing phone number for free. This includes broadband and phone packages on a rolling monthly basis.

All of its packages can include free evening and weekend calls for a small additional monthly cost with voicemail and call waiting.

You can also add other call add-ons:

  • Anytime UK Landline Call Plan (£3 per month)
  • UK Mobile Call Plan (£3 per month)
  • International Call Plan (£5 per month)

Hyperoptic’s phone services are delivered via VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol’), so don’t require a phone line.

Can I get Hyperoptic broadband deals in my area?

Because Hyperoptic operates its own network, coverage is very different from the Openreach and Virgin Media networks, and it has relatively limited availability compared to the big names.

However, it is available in selected locations across England, Scotland, and Wales.

To find out if your building has been hooked up to Hyperoptic's network, use our postcode checker. In some limited cases more than one building will be in the same postcode area or your building may still be in the pre-order phase, if this is the case, Hyperoptic \will confirm availability before you sign up.

Property developers within Hyperoptic areas can apply to have their buildings upgraded to bring gigabit fibre to their tenants, so if other buildings in your area have Hyperoptic already, talk to your property manager about the possibility of an upgrade. If they know that there's demand in the building, they may be more likely to invest in hyperfast broadband. You can also register your interest on the Hyperoptic website. Buildings with the highest customer demand get the lowest installation costs, and they also get connected before anyone else.

Does Hyperoptic offer a Social Tariff?

Hyperoptic does offer a Social Tariff package for those on Universal Credit or benefits.

There are two Fair Fibre plans available, both on a rolling monthly basis. Prices start from £15 per month, with £0 activation fee.

For more help, visit our guide to broadband on benefits.

Hyperoptic Wi-Fi Router

You get a free Wi-Fi Hyperhub router bundled in with Hyperoptic deals. In most cases, this will be set up by an engineer during your internet service installation process.

If you upgrade to include a Hyperoptic Total Wi-Fi mesh service (£7 per month), you'll receive an upgraded Zyxel EX3301 dual-band Wi-Fi 6 router.

Hyperoptic extras and free gifts

Hyperoptic is focused on great value ultrafast broadband. It isn't a provider that throws in lots of free extras. However, at the time of writing, it was possible to get  months free on sign-up for its 150Mb, 500Mb and 1Gbps packages. A Hyperoptic voucher code wasn’t required.

Hyperoptic also pledges never to raise prices in the middle of your contract, and it offers automatic compensation in the case of delayed activation, service outages, and missed appointments.

Switching to Hyperoptic

If you're unhappy with your current broadband package, but you're still tied into a contract, you might want to take a look at Hyperoptic's 'Switch Now' incentive. For those signing up to a 24-month residential package, it's possible to get up to 9 months service up and running alongside your existing broadband, until your current contract ends. This comes with a 30-day guarantee, so if you're not seeing an improvement with your internet speeds, you can easily cancel without any exit fees.

Hyperoptic’s Price Match Guarantee

If you spot other broadband retailers offering a Residential Full Fibre Broadband packages or a Broadband & Phone Service with the same, or better specifications at a lower cost, you can make use of the price match guarantee. Hyperoptic will then match this price.

This offer is only open to new Hyperoptic customers who haven’t signed up for a package yet, but also applies to existing customers in their 30-day cooling off period. To get help with this you can call Hyperoptic customer support on 0333 332 1111. Or you can email [email protected].

Hyperoptic Broadband: pros and cons

We like We don't like

  • Offers both long-term and rolling monthly deals
  • No need to take phone service if you don’t want it
  • Fixed price guarantee
  • Truly unlimited usage
  • Rolling monthly Social Tariff available
  • Short contracts available - a choice of 24, 12 or 1-month contracts
  • Limited availability - only select urban locations are supported
  • Installation can be expensive

What are the drawbacks of Hyperoptic?

Let's face it, not everything can be perfect, and even the best deals may have a downside.

  • Very limited availability - Hyperoptic is only available in a limited number of (mostly upmarket) apartment blocks in a limited number of postcodes in a limited number of cities. Even if it's available in the building across the street from you, it doesn't mean you'll be able to get it yourself.
  • Non-standard installation can be expensive - If you have non-standard requirements, you may be liable for a pricier installation fee.
  • No copper phone line during outages - Hyperoptic's telephone services work over your broadband connection, meaning they won't work if you have a power cut or broadband outage. This may not be a problem, and can be mitigated by paying £35 for the battery backup option. Be aware that you may have to rely on your mobile phone to make emergency calls, or separately maintain a copper phone connection if continuous phone line availability is critical.
  • Excessive usage policy - Although Hyperoptic's broadband is unlimited and unthrottled, only using traffic management to prioritise telephone calls, its fair usage policy states that if you make such excessive use of their services that other customers' connections are detrimentally affected, then you may be given a written warning. You may even have your service suspended or terminated. Their terms and conditions also define a number of stringent 'content standards' that prohibit use of your connection for activities such as deceiving, impersonating or annoying any person, which some users may consider too restrictive.

How to get Hyperoptic Broadband

There's a slight difference in installation compared to regular Openreach services, because you’ll need an engineer visit to connect the fibre optic line to your home.

The line is usually run in close to your front door, and the router will be installed close to where the fibre optic cable enters your property; you can ask to have it in another location, but there might be an additional cost.

Installation usually takes around an hour, and engineers work six days a week.

Which Hyperoptic package should I choose?

An important first question to ask yourself is, do you need hyperfast speeds, or would ultrafast symmetric broadband meet all your household's needs?

If you're a light user who doesn't do much uploading (such as sharing photos and videos on social media, or syncing or backing up your devices to the cloud) then the 50Mb package may meet all your needs while saving money compared to the other packages. These speeds are similar to what are on offer through other providers' basic fibre deals. It's likely to be good enough for most homes.

If you have a busy household, or you make use of cloud backup or syncing, are a vlogger, social networker or content creator, you're likely to want the speed of 150Mb or 1Gb connections. Not only do they offer vastly superior download speeds, but their upload speeds are among the best on the market.

150Mb download is usually fast enough for even very active households, and the 150Mb uploads mean cloud sync and backup, or video sharing on sites like YouTube, is faster than on any competitor's network. The 150Mb package is likely to be a significant upgrade even from an asymmetric fibre service like BT Superfast Fibre 2. However, if you want the very fastest connection possible, the 1Gb symmetric gigabit hyperfast broadband is unbeatable.

Points to consider before you choose

  • Is speed a priority for you?
  • Can your computer or other devices actually handle speeds of 1Gb (needs a 2GHz or faster processor and an up to date network card)? If not, opt for 150Mb
  • Do you have a busy household or make a lot of use of HD or better video services?
  • Do you upload photos or videos, or make use of cloud sync and backup services like DropBox, iCloud or SkyDrive?
  • Do you need a phone line to your home, or could you make do with just mobile phones for voice?
  • If you need a phone line, would Hyperoptic's voice-over-broadband phone service work for you, or do you need a phone line that works when your power or broadband is down?

What do I get when I sign up to Hyperoptic?

It's always good to know upfront what you'll get when signing up with an ISP so you know what you can enjoy for free, or to budget for any extras you may want.

  • Hyperhub wireless router - New customers receive a wireless router that's fast enough to deliver your broadband at top speed. You can also connect your own router if you prefer. The Hyperhub is required if you need to use Hyperoptic's phone service, but can also be connected to a separate wireless router or network switch.
  • 24/7 customer service - Hyperoptic's telephone customer service and technical support is available 24/7 to help with any queries or problems you may have, this is a national rate number but free from a Hyperoptic phone line. You can also raise technical support tickets using Hyperoptic's website or live chat 24 hours a day on weekdays or between 8am and 6pm on weekends.

Expert Summary

If you’re after a trustworthy deal with very fast, full fibre speeds, it’s worth taking a look to see if you can sign up to Hyperoptic’s broadband plans. Unfortunately, it’s not accessible everywhere, and you can only sign up in 64 towns and cities across the UK.

If you can sign up, you’ll have the freedom to choose between a range of different contract lengths. A fixed price promise means you won’t get any nasty price hikes mid-contract.

Hyperoptic is almost unrivalled for its ultrafast upload speeds, which are as nifty as its download speeds. This is known as a ‘symmetrical connection’. Sadly, that’s something even the likes of Virgin Media doesn't offer at the moment.
